Challenge / Goal
Hydrogen is an increasingly important medium with which to store renewable energy and can be used in transport, heating and power supply applications. H2 Aberdeen aims to stimulate innovative hydrogen projects, advance the take-up of hydrogen technologies and position Aberdeen as a centre for excellence for hydrogen technology. The vision of H2 Aberdeen will further enhance Aberdeen's reputation for energy innovation and support Scotland's ambitions to become a world- leading destination for investment in supporting renewables and low carbon energy.
Solution
Some of the first hydrogen projects which Aberdeen undertook were High Vlo City (which funded 4 hydrogen buses) and HyTransit (which funded 6 buses) both of which were supported by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCHJU). At the same time a state-of-the-art hydrogen refuelling station was built which was Scotland's first commercial-scale hydrogen production and bus refuelling station. Hydrogen is produced on site at the refuelling station through electrolysis. Local bus operators piloted the 10 hydrogen buses in the city region.
