Challenge / Goal
The former Philips industrial complex in the “Strijp-S” neighbourhood of Eindhoven is being transformed into a creative smart district. Strijp-S is built as a smart data driven area and therefore needed a strong data backbone. Huge variety of different data related - smart services are expected in the area.
Solution
With the aim of developing the Backbone data network, a strong fibre-optic data infrastructure for the entire Strijp-S district was implemented. The goal was to connect outdoor and indoor facilities. The Backbone follows the grid of public lighting poles. Therefore the light poles are able to function as connectivity points, which can be used to install different kind of sensors.
500km of Fibre Optic(Backbone) cables have been installed in ducts in the Strijp-S district (68 acres). It acts as a Backbone for additional data related services in Strijp-S. 227 smart light poles are directly connected to the fibre - 400 poles in total through gateways in the other poles.
The fibre optic infrastructure provides very high number of connection points per km2. Installation of cables was combined with other construction work that required ground diffing: lowering the overall costs of the implementation. Additional length and capacity of fibre has been provided.
Furthermore, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) has been implemented to enable labelling of datasets, public Wi-Fi has also been added to create wireless connections to the Strijp-S network. To make the Backbone fully operational, a Smart City Hub has been installed on Strijp-S. All data and platforms can be controlled and connected from this Hub.
